NDGF Leaflet

The NDGF leaflet is for hand out at conferences, workshops and talks. First important use is at Supercomputing 2006.

Introduction

NDGF aims to create a seamless computing infrastructure for all Nordic researchers, leveraging existing, national computational resources and Grid infrastructures.

NDGF utilizes an optical private 10 Giga bit network to connect the relevant sites into one big LAN. Hence, NDGF can be seen as one huge compute center spanning the entire Nordic area.

NDGF is not a resource provider and does not force researchers to use the Grid, but rather helps researchers to share their resources when this is advantageous for Nordic or international collaborations.

In this scheme, High Energy Physics, HEP, fits perfectly, but other sciences, e.g., bio-informatics and astro sciences are expected to become heavily involved as well.

The NDGF Tier-1

The NDGF HEP activities is centered around the creation of the NDGF Tier-1 center for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). As NDGF does not possess any resources, the actual Tier-1 service will be distributed between the seven largest computer centers (see figure) in the Nordic countries, utilizing the fact that up-time requirements can be relaxed by redundancy.

The middleware used for the computing and storage infrastructure will be NorduGrid/ARC, the third Grid flavor in the WLCG, together with gLite and OSG.

NREN and GRID

Organizationally, NDGF is co-hosted with the Nordic Research and Educational Network NORDUnet, following the vision that the Grid and access to computing resources should be no different from other services on the network.

NDGF is funded equally by the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish research Councils
